Burnout

A state of extreme exhaustion and reduced effectiveness that can result from sustained high-pressure work and excessive hours. It can manifest as profound tiredness, a loss of enjoyment in previously motivating activities, and a general inability to perform.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)

A medical condition characterized by persistent and debilitating fatigue that is not relieved by rest and can worsen with physical or mental exertion. While sometimes considered a 'woolly' diagnosis, it can be a very real experience for individuals suffering from extreme overwork.

Startup Sprint vs. Marathon

An analogy describing the different phases of a company's growth. The early 'sprint' phase demands intense, sustained effort due to the high risk of failure, while the later 'marathon' phase, once the company is more self-sufficient, allows for a more sustainable and long-term pace.

?
How can entrepreneurs protect their mental health while building a company?

While putting in significant graft and sustained hours is necessary, it's crucial to keep an eye on oneself and take the foot off the accelerator when signs of burnout appear, as ignoring them will eventually catch up.

?
What are common symptoms of overworking and impending burnout?

Symptoms can include becoming super tired, stopping engaging in activities previously enjoyed (like going to the gym), dreading activities that used to provide a lift, and even being unable to go to work, opting to stay home instead.

?
What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS) and how is it diagnosed?

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is a condition a doctor might diagnose when someone experiences profound and persistent fatigue that significantly impacts their ability to function. While not always clearly defined, it indicates a severe and prolonged drop in energy levels.

?
How does the intensity of work required for a startup evolve over time?

Initially, a startup demands a 'sprint' phase with intense, sustained effort to ensure its survival. As the company matures and becomes more self-sufficient, it transitions into a 'marathon' stage, allowing for a more sustainable and less frantic pace.

1. Adapt Pace from Sprint to Marathon

Recognize when your startup transitions from a critical ‘sprint’ phase, where intense effort is required to ensure survival, to a more sustainable ‘marathon’ stage. Adjust your work pace accordingly to avoid long-term burnout, as maintaining a full sprint for years is unsustainable.

2. Recognize and Respond to Burnout Signs

Pay close attention to early indicators of burnout, such as extreme tiredness, dreading activities you once enjoyed (like going to the gym), or a sudden lack of motivation to work. When you see these signs, consciously reduce your workload or take a break to prevent severe fatigue.

3. Prioritize Sleep and Rest

Actively change your sleep patterns and take time off when advised by a doctor or when experiencing symptoms of chronic fatigue. Ignoring these needs can lead to prolonged periods of reduced capability and productivity.

4. Delegate and Restructure Roles

As your company grows and becomes more self-sufficient, bring in more team members and consider relinquishing high-pressure roles, like CEO, to distribute the workload. This helps alleviate personal burden and contributes to maintaining an even keel.

5. Beware of Counterproductive Rewards

Avoid compensating for long work hours by excessively going out or burning the candle at both ends during evenings and weekends. This perceived ‘reward mechanism’ can actually exacerbate fatigue and contribute to burnout rather than alleviate it.

If you go too mad in terms of hours, it's gonna it's gonna catch up with you eventually so you you will get yourself burned out if you're not careful.

There is no way around it, you're gonna have to put the graft in, you have to put the hours in, it's gonna have to be for a sustained period of time to make these things work.

Julian Hearn

When I stopped going to work there was a couple of times where I just I'd get up in the morning get on the sofa and didn't go in and that was not me.

In the early days of a startup it's a sprint for sure you could die the following day basically if if the company if you don't do certain work the company could fail.
