Moment 8 - Julian Hearn on How He Avoided Burnout Whilst Building Huel
1. Adapt Pace from Sprint to Marathon
Recognize when your startup transitions from a critical ‘sprint’ phase, where intense effort is required to ensure survival, to a more sustainable ‘marathon’ stage. Adjust your work pace accordingly to avoid long-term burnout, as maintaining a full sprint for years is unsustainable.
2. Recognize and Respond to Burnout Signs
Pay close attention to early indicators of burnout, such as extreme tiredness, dreading activities you once enjoyed (like going to the gym), or a sudden lack of motivation to work. When you see these signs, consciously reduce your workload or take a break to prevent severe fatigue.
3. Prioritize Sleep and Rest
Actively change your sleep patterns and take time off when advised by a doctor or when experiencing symptoms of chronic fatigue. Ignoring these needs can lead to prolonged periods of reduced capability and productivity.
4. Delegate and Restructure Roles
As your company grows and becomes more self-sufficient, bring in more team members and consider relinquishing high-pressure roles, like CEO, to distribute the workload. This helps alleviate personal burden and contributes to maintaining an even keel.
5. Beware of Counterproductive Rewards
Avoid compensating for long work hours by excessively going out or burning the candle at both ends during evenings and weekends. This perceived ‘reward mechanism’ can actually exacerbate fatigue and contribute to burnout rather than alleviate it.
